Sophia McMahon
Senior Associate, B.A, B.Bus (Mktg), LL.M (JD)
Prior to becoming a lawyer, Sophia studied and worked as a musician and instrumental violin teacher. She also completed two degrees in Arts and Business (Marketing) from the University of Melbourne and RMIT University.
Sophia completed her Juris Doctor degree from Monash University in early 2017. She was admitted to the Supreme Court of Victoria in May 2018 and to the High Court of Australia in July 2021.
After graduation, Sophia has worked at a range of law firms practising in areas which include insurance law and building and construction law. She has acted for insurers, owners, owners corporations, builders and developers in respect of a range of building and construction law matters including domestic building disputes. Sophia has experience acting in defect disputes, combustible cladding claims, structural cracking and water ingress claims and in respect of fire safety defects. She has also advised on governance issues and a range of matters particular to owners corporations.
Prior to joining Oldham Construction Lawyers, Sophia worked within a highly experienced domestic building insurance and owners corporation’s law team within a mid-tier Melbourne law firm. During her tenure there, she acted for a leading government domestic building warranty insurer and was involved in advising on and defending both litigated and non-litigated claims, providing advice in respect of policy interpretation and appearing in the VCAT at mediations and compulsory conferences.
Sophia joined the Oldham Construction Lawyers team in January 2024 where she acts in both front and back-end matters in the building and construction law space. She is involved in advising builders and contractors in respect of payment claims pursuant to the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act 2002, advising building practitioners in respect of employment contracts specific to the building and construction industry and advising and acting in respect of a variety of domestic building disputes and domestic building insurance claims. Sophia is also presently acting in several complex County Court and VCAT disputes.
Sophia’s years of experience working within law firms has equipped her with a comprehensive knowledge of the litigation process and a range of building and construction law matters.
Sophia is client facing, approachable and diligent and is passionate about building and construction law. She is also commercially focused and practical and is committed to achieving successful outcomes for clients and maintaining solid relationships.
